Blood found in home where Maine tot was last seen
Investigators say they've found blood inside the Maine home where a toddler was reported missing six weeks ago. State police spokesman Steve McCausland says the blood was found in the basement early in the investigation into Ayla Reynolds' disappearance from her father's home in Waterville. Her father, Justin DiPietro, says Ayla was not in her bed when he checked on her the morning of Dec. 17. McCausland says the blood is troubling and police believe DiPietro and two other adults at DiPietro's home that morning "have not given us the full story." The blood is being analyzed to determine whose it is, but McCausland doesn't know when the results would be available. Ayla was 20 months old when she disappeared. WCVB-TV in Boston first reported the discovery of the blood.

Malnourished NY dog found shivering, tied to tree
Animal welfare officials in upstate New York say a malnourished Great Dane was found tied to a tree in icy temperatures. The Albany Times Union reports the abandoned dog was standing in ice and snow Friday evening on a bike path near the Mohawk River behind Schenectady Community College. The Schenectady County Society for the Protection of Animals says they received a tip about the dog and went to the bike path to investigate. When they arrived, one officer saw someone dart out from the woods and run away. Officials say the "gentle giant" was shivering and dehydrated when found. The dog is recovering well at an officer's home.

Once-homeless science whiz moves into new NY house
A New York teen who was living at a homeless shelter when she was picked as a semifinalist in a prestigious national science competition has moved into her new home. Samantha Garvey and her family were handed the keys to their house in Bay Shore, Long Island on Saturday. Garvey says she was "overwhelmed" by the support and generosity she's received since being named a semifinalist in the Intel Science contest last month. She wasn't among the 40 finalists. The Brentwood High School senior and her family had been living in a homeless shelter when her two years of research on a mussel population garnered her accolades. Suffolk County officials helped find a three-bedroom home where the family could live.

Mazda recalls more than 52,000 Tribute SUVs
Mazda says it's recalling more than 52,000 Tribute SUVs from the 2001 and 2002 model years because of possible brake fluid leaks. The automaker says that some of the vehicles' brake master cylinder reservoir cap can leak brake fluid. If that happens, the fluid could corrode electrical connectors in the vehicle's brake system. That could lead to melting, smoke or a fire. The automaker says it will notify owners, replace the reservoir cap and modify the brake system for free. Until the repairs are made, Mazda Motor Corp. says owners should park the 52,390 vehicles in question outside. Earlier this month, Ford Motor Co. recalled 244,530 Escape SUVs made during the same model years for the same problem. Ford partnered with Mazda to jointly produce vehicles for many years and still owns a small stake in the automaker.

"Rochester Model" gets spotlight for hypertension program
An effort led by business leaders, in partnership with local healthcare organizations, to make the Finger Lakes region the healthiest community in the country serves as a model that other cities could follow, according to the Journal of Clinical Hypertension. The "Rochester Model" was created by the Finger Lakes Health Collaborative -- a partnership of the Rochester Business Alliance, Finger Lakes Health Systems Agency and area hospitals and leaders -- to reduce the cost of local healthcare. The article in the Journal of Clinical Hypertension focuses on the efforts to reduce hypertension in the community -- a leading cause of strokes, heart attacks and kidney and heart diseases. An estimated 32-percent of the region's population has high blood pressure and the group wants to reduce the number of people with hypertension to 25-percent in a five-year time period. If the program is effective, it could mean potential savings of $8.5-million annually for the Finger Lakes.

International plan to govern Lake Ontario levels
(AP) A new plan for controlling Lake Ontario water levels is intended to restore diversity in shoreline plant and animal communities by permitting greater fluctuations. The International Joint Commission, a treaty organization of the U.S. and Canada, released the regulatory plan Monday. The panel says the lake would be allowed to be a few inches higher, on average, in spring and fall than the current regulations allow. Similar proposals in recent years were withdrawn after protests from shoreline residents and businesses. The water levels of the lake and the St. Lawrence Seaway are controlled by releases from the Moses-Saunders Dam in Cornwall, Ontario. Public hearings will be scheduled in late spring and comments taken until June 15.
